Gone are the days when huddling round a radio to listen the most recent tracks was common place amongst music hungry teenagers, nowadays, new music is coming at us from in all places. TV commercials, the Internet and films all provide us with our every day sound track and it is here where they can discover, listen to and share new music with each other. Everyone is looking for the next massive album or song and with artists releasing new tunes faster than ever before, you need keen eye and a lovely ear to spot the next number before it is played to death on the radio.
However, alternative music has its roots in the punk movement of the late 70s. Punk brought music back to fundamentals with a raw and minimalist sound that was different than the popular music of the time. Then throughout the 80s an underground group of bands who were played mostly on college radio and inspired by punk music began to be labelled as the choice. But it wasn't until the 90s that alternative music would become a recognizable catch phrase and by the mid 90s all music on the radio was thought about alternative rock.
At present we can hear music both old and new, can read about different singers, musicians, bands etc in different sites dedicated to different genres of music.
